The Bosingak Bell Pavilion was originally built in 1396. Historically, it was rung 33 times in the morning to announce the opening of the city gates and 28 times at night to announce their closure. The original bell is considered Korea Treasure Number 2 and was replaced in 1985 with the replica being used today. The opportunity for regular citizens and even tourists to ring the bell is one of the more unique opportunies offered. During New Year's celebrations, a handful of government leaders and celebrities take turns ringing the bell.
