Cemetery at Tōkei-ji

From near the uppermost reaches of the cemetery at Tōkei-ji, looking down the mountain towards the east. There are several celebrities buried here, including the English author Reginald Horace Blyth, who arguably did the most to popularize haiku poetry in the English-speaking world. Shōkozan Tōkei-ji is a former nunnery. It was founded in 1285 by a widow who (as was the custom) became a nun and was dedicated to the memory of her husband. The founder made it a refuge for women who were abused by their husbands and, until 1873 when the laws were changed, women could become officially divorced by staying at the temple for 2 years.
