This static display of model D51 number 1072 is outside Kobe station. There were 1115 model D51 steam locomotives built by various manufacturers from 1936 through 1945. While over 170 were preserved in Japan, currently only 2 remain operational, with most of the others on display in a fashion similar to this site. Some have simple roofs protecting them, others are enclosed in roofed cages (which protects them from birds), and a rare few are preserved indoors.
