Five-story Pagoda and Sanctuary Hall at Hōryū-ji

The pagoda at Hōryū-ji is claimed to be the oldest wooden structure in existance. It is estimated that the tree forming the center pole was cut down in 594. The Kondō suffered severe damage in 1949 as the result of a fire, so at most 20% of the building is original material from the construction undertaken around 670.
